Abstract
Seaweeds are an important ecosystem component and can also be a good biological resource of bioproducts with functional properties, so collection and identification are necessary. This study aims to morphologically characterize, assess the diversity, and determine the molecular identity of seaweed species collected from the coastal areas of La Union, Philippines. Phylogenetic relationships of the identified seaweed species were analyzed using Mega v11. Eleven samples were morphologically identified: Gracilaria sp., Sargassum fluitans, Padina sp., Chaetomorpha crassa, Gracilaria arcuata, Ulva sp., and Sargassum natans. The sampling sites' Shannon-Wiener Index Values (1.15127 and 1.18227) (Site 1: Canaoay, San Fernando, La Union and Site 2: Damortis, Rosario, La Union) indicate that seaweed diversity was very low. Two specimens were identified molecularly through NCBI BLASTn belonging to 2 Genera, namely Gracilaria and Ulva. Moreover, phylogenetic analysis was done by employing the maximum likelihood method using MEGA v11 to construct a phylogenetic tree which shows that Specimen 1 does not belong to a monophyletic group. In contrast, Specimen 8 belongs to order Ulvales
