Abstract
This study assessed the extent of pesticide use on agricultural crops in San Gabriel, La Union, from January 2022 to March 2022. Descriptive research design was used with 378 respondents from 15 barangays of the municipality visited. Data analysis was done through Mean Deviation Standard using Excel 2016.
To further understand the nature of the respondents, their demographic profile, the pesticides they use, their knowledge and understanding of pesticide use, their safety practices before, during, and after usage of pesticides, the symptoms they feel whenever they apply pesticides, and the Personal Protective Equipment they were documented and analyzed.
Based on the study results, respondents do not use proper PPE because they lack further education in pesticide use. They are using different brand names of Pesticides. In general, these pesticides are type II (Yellow), III (Blue), and IV (Green). Only a few respondents attended pesticide-related seminars explaining why they don’t understand how pesticides affect the environment and how it enters the body. Poor storage and disposal of mixed, used, and unused pesticides were observed. They also use least to nonPPE when removing residues in the used equipment for pesticide application. And gloves, boots general work wear, and facemask are the only PPE utilized by the farmers. Before the pandemic improvised facemask's (cloth/garment used to protect the nose and mouth) were used. Only after the pandemic was a commercially produced facesmask used. And those with existing illness tends to feel or sel-report symptoms realted to pesticide application.
Government Policies such as intervention in the educational system, approval of Pesticides to be introduced on the market upon extensive testing, promotion of Personal Protective Equipment by its affordability and availability, extension works on the training of farmers in proper pesticide use and disposal, and pesticide sellers/retailers should undergo proper traning before they are released with the license to sell pesticides to ensure that they will be able to educate the farmers correctly.
