Abstract
Is a study involving the student achievers of selected private
high schools in Agoo, La Union. This was conducted to find out what
motivational factors contribute to the respondents' academic
performance. It sought answers to the following questions: 1. What
is the profile of the respondents in terms of their age, gender and
monthly income of their family? 2. What are the factors that affect the
respondents in terms of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation? and 3. Is
there a significant relationship between the motivational factors and
the respondents' profile? Thus, a Null Hypothesis was formulated
wherein the researchers assumed that there IS no significant
relationship between the kind of motivation and the profile of the
respondents.
This study made use of the descriptive survey method, involving
44 respondents through purposive sampling. The data were gathered
through the use of a questionnaire. Statistical tools such as frequency
count, percentage distribution, weighted mean and microstatistics
were used to treat the data.
The respondents agree that extrinsic motivation affects their
academic performance, with an average weighted mean of 3.65, which
falls on the 5-point scale 3.41-4.20. The respondents strongly agree
that intrinsic motivation affects their academic performance with an
average weighted mean of 4.34, which falls on the 5-point scale 4.21-
5.00. Most of the respondents belong to the 15 and above age bracket.
Most of the respondents are female; they belong to the average bracket
in terms of the monthly income of their family, followed by those who
belong to the low bracket. The factors that affect the respondents in
terms of Intrinsic Motivation are: they attend school to widen their
intellectual perspective; they learn Filipino and English to improve
their Communication skills; Studying/learning gives them satisfaction
or pleasure; Studying makes them feel they are more informed which
in tum develops their self-confidence; they love learning and they get a
personal reward from what learning brings. The factors that affect the
respondents in terms of extrinsic motivation are: they learn dates of
historical facts to pass exams in Araling Panlipunan; The praise they
receive from their friends and family motivates them to study hard;
they maintain their high grades to avoid punishment from
teachers/parents; they strive to get high grades to be appreciated by
teachers and classmates; they study their lesson well because their
parents say they should.
The computed Correlation Coefficient showed that Intrinsic
Motivation correlates with Age,with a value of .31958 compared to the
critical value of .29694 at .05 level of significance (2-tail). Hence,
intrinsic motivation contributes to the academic performance of the
respondents.
From the result of this study, the researchers have formulated the
following recommendations:
1. The student achievers should continue resorting to Intrinsic
Motivation because learning is more permanent and they will
feel more fulfilled.
2. Extrinsic motivation IS not bad, but as much as possible,
students should avoid it because it may become difficult for
them to study and achieve their goal if they are doing it for
other people hence; they will feel no satisfaction, pride and
sense of achievement.
3. Teachers should know more about motivation, their kinds,
their effects, in order to tap the right motivation to be
developed by their students.
4. Further research is recommended and encouraged in this
area by comparing achievers from private schools with
achievers from public schools and also their general
perception on the motivational approaches that their teachers
use.
5. Based from the result of the study, a Seminar-Workshop
regarding Motivation is proposed.
