Abstract
The study determined how the different soil media as potting media affected the
growth performance of 2 varieties of bougainvillea cuttings in terms of number of days
new shoots appeared, number of shoots appeared and the length of new stems.
The two - factorial experiment following the Randomized Complete Block
Design (RCBD) were used with four treatments replicated three times. The following
treatments were To - 100% garden soil, TI - 50% garden soil + 50% cocodust, T2 - 50%
garden soil 50% ricehull, and T3 - 50% garden soil + 25% cocodust + 25% ricehull.
Bougainvillea cuttings were selected from the healthy branches. Each and all of
the stem cuttings has three nodes. The basal end was planted at a depth of 10 em. The
planted cuttings were placed at a partially shaded area. Watering of the plants was done
three times a week.
Following the formula of two-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) set at 0.05
and 0.0 I levels of significance was used to determine if there is significant differences
among the treatments. The Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) was used further to
determine where lies the significance.
The result of the study showed significant difference between the 2 varieties of
bougainvillea cuttings in terms of number of days new shoots appeared. Variety I (pink)
performed better by having lesser number of days for new shoots to appear.
The different soil media (potting media) or treatments, variety and the combined
effect of variety and treatment did not have significant effect on the number of shoots
appeared and length of new stem. Growth performance of the 2 varieties of bougainvillea
cuttings is comparable when subjected to different soil media or treatments.
Based on the number of shoots appeared, the different soil media (treatments),
variety and the combined effect of variety and treatment revealed insignificantly
difference. These factors did not have a significant effect on the number of shoots
appeared.
As to the length of new stems, the different treatments, variety and the combined
effect of variety and treatment declared insignificant difference. It implies that these
independent variables did not have a significant effect on the length of new stems.
