Abstract
Cacao is recognized as one of the country’s key agricultural crops. However, increasing incidence of drought poses a significant threat on cacao production. This study investigated the morpho-physiological responses of cacao seedlings to drought duration. Previous studies shown that drought stress affects plant growth and development, however limited research has examined its impact over different drought durations in cacao seedlings. A completely randomized design was used with five treatments: T₀ (well-watered), T₁ (14 days), T₂ (20 days), T₃ (26 days), and T₄ (32 days of drought). Parameters measured included plant height, fresh biomass, leaf area, stem diameter, root length, chlorophyll content, stomatal conductance, and chlorophyll fluorescence. Results revealed that extended drought significantly reduced fresh biomass, leaf area, stem diameter, chlorophyll content, and stomatal conductance. Chlorophyll fluorescence also declined, indicating reduced photosynthetic efficiency. Root length and plant height were not significantly affected. Seedlings under the control treatment showed superior performance. The findings provide insight into cacao’s drought tolerance and adaptive responses under varying drought durations.
