Abstract
Vocabulary retention is an indispensable tool in learning a new language. This is considered a stepping stone in understanding listening and written inputs and in producing spoken and written outputs.
In this paper the use of speed drawing and kinesics were introduced as learning strategies in improving vocabulary. The control group used context clues as learning strategy. Ninety Grade 7 students were introduced with one hundred words using the mentioned vocabulary retention learning strategies. True experimental research using the multiple treatment design was employed in determining the effect of these vocabulary learning strategies. The Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) and Bonferroni Test were used in analyzing the data gathered.
The result of the delayed posttest showed that speed drawing yielded a very high retention rate while kinesics and context clues resulted to high retention rate. Al of the three vocabulary learning strategies: speed drawing, kinesics and context clues emerged as effective ways of improving vocabulary retention. Hence, the three learning strategies are appropriate ways of improving vocabulary retention.
