Abstract
Open-ended approach is a methodology theorized to encourage students to express and increase their own mathematical understanding. This paper investigated the effect of open-ended approach on the Mathematics performance of the Grade 9 students. Pretest-posttest control group design was utilized. Quantitative and qualitative data were obtained to evaluate students’ performance in both groups. Quantitative data were based on the worksheets scores and pretest-posttest scores while qualitative data were obtained in the students’ class participation based on average number of raised hands, and analysis of performance/experience during the teaching-learning process. The experimental group performed better than the control group. The results showed evident higher interest, self-confidence, social skills and higher worksheet scores of the experimental group and no significant difference between the mean pretest scores of the two groups but with significant difference between their posttest scores and in their mean gain. Overall, the open-ended approach was found to be effective.
