Abstract
This study investigated the shifting pattern of the Pangasinan language through an analysis of the language use, attitude, and preferences of Pangasinan speakers. Two sets of instruments were administered. The first one was a questionnaire on language use, attitudes, and preferences while the second one was an interview guide. Aside from these, a survey of existing programs and policies helping the promotion and use of the Pangasinan language was also done.
Using the descriptive method, the results of the study show that the Pangasinan language is being edged by the Filipino language in the different communicative domains: home, community, and school. The reason behind this is the low valuation of Pangasinenses of their native language as shown by their apathetic attitude towards the imminent shifting or death of the Pangasinan language.
Based on these results, this study proposes a language revitalization program in order to reverse the shifting trend of the Pangasinan language.
