Abstract
The study was conducted to determine which brand of commercial feeds gave
the best result in terms of the total gain in weight, total weight, total feed consumption,
and final feed conversion efficiency of the animals. The Completely Randomized Design
(CRD) was used in this study.
There were four brands of commercial feeds used, namely: T1-B-meg, T2-Purina,
T3-Vitarich, Ta-Selecta feeds. There were 12 piglets used and three piglets were placed
in each treatment. Each piglet represented a treatment.
Results showed that there were no significant variations in the initial weight of the
weanlings, final weight, total gain in weight, total feed consumption. However, feed
conversion efficiency of the animals was affected by the different brands of commercial
feeds.
Generally, pigs given Purina feeds registered the highest mean in terms of total feed
consumption, total gain in weight, and final weight of the animals. However, pigs given
Selecta feeds (T4) had the highest mean as far as feed conversion' efficiency is
concerned. This indicates that any of the different brands of commercial feeds can be
used depending on the current price of these feeds in the market. However, scientists
in St. Louis, Missouri (1982) reported and claimed that Purina registered the best results
in their experiment. Their findings corroborate with the results of this study.
There are no conclusive results as to which brand of commercial feeds should be
suitable for the weanlings. It is, therefore, recommended that further study on the use
of different brands of commercial feeds be conducted.
