Abstract
In the Philippines, viticulture is an emerging profitable farm business with excellent potential for extensive commercial production. Grapes have been popularly grown in the province of La Union because of their high value and demand. This study aimed to assess the grape production of La Union, document the existing management practices of grape growers, and evaluate the fruit quality of grapes in La Union. The study was conducted at the selected grape farms in La Union, while the testing of nutrient status, pH of the collected soil samples, and sweetness of fruit from the selected grape farms were done at Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University, North La Union Campus, College of Agriculture, Bacnotan, La Union. A total of 30 grape growers from the municipalities of Bauang and Caba, La Union, were selected as respondents. The findings revealed that most grape growers were 41-50 years of age, females, college graduates, and tenants. The majority grows grapes in less than 1/4 ha of land. Only two varieties are grown in the study area: Red Cardinal and Green Brazilian, but 93.33% grow Red Cardinal. Rooted cuttings were preferred as planting material, which they sourced from their plants. Thrips are the common insect pest on their farm and are very serious, especially during the dry season. All of them used Complete and Urea fertilizer. Some used foliar and organic compost as fertilizer, depending on the availability. Pruning of branches, fruit thinning, and flower clipping are consistently practiced. Most grape growers harvest 80-90 days from flowering, with 46.67% of the respondents yielding 1.4 kg – 1.7 kg per square meter. Agri-tourism through pick-and-pay was the primary marketing channel. Based on the PNS for Table Grapes, 56.67% of grape farms have Class I fruits. Most of the fruit sampled has sweetness below 16 degree Brix. Soil potassium levels were sufficient in most farms. Majority of the grape farms have acidic soil.
