Abstract
This is a descriptive study which determined the performance rating on the basic
math concepts, of Grade I pupils of Agoo East Central School, who went to preschool
and those who did not undergo during school year 2002-2003.
There are five sections of Grade I pupils, having 112 respondents who went-to
preschool and there are 32 respondents who did not undergo preschool.
The test form prepared by the researchers served as the main instrument in
gathering the needed data. It has SIX parts: the describing/exploration;
sorting/classification; spatial relations; numerical construction; arithmetic operations; and
ordering seriation. The researchers analyzed and compared the achievement score of the
two groups. Correlation was used in determining whether there is significant relationship
on the performance rating on the Basic Math Concept between pupils who attended
preschool and pupils who did not undergo preschool.
Respondents who went to preschool answered the different basic math concepts
easily. They are good in reading figures and they find it easy to understand the test
questions that were given.
Respondents who did no.. undergo preschool education find difficulty in
solving mathematical operations and concepts. It is also difficult for them to read and
write figures, thus, they got lower scores,
