Abstract
Bean aphid is a major insect pest of pole bean plant. It sucks the all parts of the
plant which they can transmit virus diseases. They can be easily controlled with the use
of chemical insecticides, but chemical insecticides are costly and can cause several
adverse effects on the environment. Hence, this study was conducted to assess the
effectiveness of the different plant-derived insecticide against pole bean aphids and to
determine the most effective organic insecticides against pole bean aphid that could
substitute chemical insecticide. The different treatments are T0 – Control (without spray), T1 – Kakawate, T2 – Lagundi, T3 – Lantana, T4 – Makabuhay, T5 – Marigold, T6 – Chemical insecticide (Sevin 85 WP) employing RCBD in three blocks at Horticulture
Project, DMMMSU-NLUC, Bacnotan, La Union from June 20, 2016 to September 20,
2016.
Based on the results of the study, all organic insecticides were comparably
effective with the chemical insecticide on the control of population count of aphids at
vegetative, flowering and fruiting stage. The use of lagundi and makabuhay are
promising alternatives for aphid control, hence, these two botanicals are potential
substitutes to chemical insecticide.
