Abstract
Parasites, especially the internal ones are the major health problem of goats. This study was conducted to: (a) identify the gastrointestinal parasites of goats present in the municipality of Bangar, La Union; (b) determine the prevalence rate of gastrointestinal parasites in the municipality of Bangar, La Union; and (c) determine the degree of parasitic infection in the municipality of Bangar, La Union.
Fecal samples were collected from 135 goats from purposively selected barangays of Bangar, La Union and were analyzed using the Modified Stoll’s Method and the Mc Master Technique at the Parasitology Laboratory, Institute of Veterinary Medicine, DMMMSU-NLUC, Bacnotan, La Union. Data were computed, tabulated and analyzed using means and percentages.
There were eight (8) gastrointestinal parasites of goats identified in the municipality of Bangar, La Union. These were Strongyle type species, Strongyloides spp. (roundworm), Trichuris spp. (whipworm), Moniezia spp. (tapeworm), Toxocara spp. (roundworm), Euretryma spp. (fluke), Paramphistome spp. (fluke), and Fasciola spp. (fluke). The prevalence rate of gastrointestinal parasites of goats in the municipality of Bangar, La Union is 100 percent regardless of species. All the goats in the municipality of Bangar, La Union had a heavy degree of parasitic infection.
