Abstract
The study was conducted to determine the profitability of planting bush sitao and cowpea varieties between fruit-bearing rambutan trees at the Agroforestry Research and Demonstration Farm (ARDF), Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University, Bacnotan, La Union from November 15, 2008 to January 30, 2009.
Intercropping is a land management system which allows the growing of two or more crops on the same parcel of land. It is used for maximum utilization of the land without sacrificing its quality. It is also an effective way of erosion control and water loss. Intercropping bush sitao and cowpea in an agroforestry system can give a significant benefit because they are nitrogen fixing plant species, thus, can help in the improvement of the soil. At the same time it provides food and income aside from the product that can be derived from the main crop.
The bush sitao and cowpea varieties that were evaluated as treatments are native white bush sitao (V₁), black eye cowpea (V₂), Ilocos red cowpea (V₃), IPB PBS-3 bush sitao (V₄), and IT '82 (V₅).
Findings of the study revealed that bush sitao IPB PBS - 3 is the most profitable variety that could be grown in between rambutan. Moreover, bush sitao and cowpea varieties can be intercropped with rambutan as they enhance the length and diameter increments of the main crop.
