Abstract
This study was conducted to identify the gastrointestinal parasites of racing pigeons; to identify the species of parasite affected by powdered seeds of foetid cassia; to test the efficacy of powdered seeds of foetid cassia; and to determine the most effective dose in expelling gastrointestinal parasites of racing pigeons.
Thirty racing pigeons were used in the study. Five treatments replicated thrice, with two racing pigeons per replicate were used in the study. The McMaster egg counting technique and direct fecal smear were used in identifying gastrointestinal parasites. The racing pigeons were distributed using the Completely Randomized Design.
Ascaridia columbae and Raillietina spp. were the gastrointestinal parasites identified in racing pigeons. Foetid cassia seeds was effective against A. columbae but not against Raillietina species. Foetid cassia seeds has anthelmintic efficacy. Treatment 4 (200mg/kg) with 94.69 percent efficacy was the most effective dose against gastrointestinal parasites.
