Abstract
This study aimed to determine the environmental effects of the dumpsite in Agoo, La Union to the nearby residents.
There were 282 external respondents from 4 barangays surrounding the dumpsite of Agoo, La Union. The internal respondents were composed of 10 implementors: the Mayor, Municipal Planning and Development Coordinator Officers, garbage collectors and drivers were obtain by total enumeration.
The descriptive research was used in the study substantiated by water and soil analyses. Frequency counts, percentages, average means were used. T-test was used to determine the significant difference in the environmental effects of dumpsite as perceived by external and internal respondents. Pearson-r correlation was likewise used to determine the significant relationship between the distance of the respondents from the dumpsite and number of years in their locality.
Findings revealed that the respondents perceived that the dumpsite has no serious effect in terms of water quality, soil quality and biological aspect. There is a significant difference between the perception of the internal and external respondents on air quality and no significant difference on water quality, soil quality and biological aspect. There is no serious effect of the dumpsite on the health of the respondents. There is a no significant relationship between the distance and health effects as perceived by external respondents such as waterborne diseases, airborne diseases, birth defects, sickness, harboring parasite, excessive lacrymation and leptospirosis and no significant relationship on cancer.
There is a significant relationship between the number of years in the locality and health effects as perceived by the external respondents on skin irritation, sickness, harboring parasite, excessive lachrymation and leptospirosis and no significant relationship on waterborne diseases, airborne diseases, birth defects and cancer.
