Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the mangrove conservation practices in selected areas of La Union.
It sought to determine: (1) the respondents’ demographic profile (sex, civil status, age, educational attainment, numbers of years living in the area, and occupation); (2) the level of awareness (importance of mangrove forest, and destruction of mangrove forest); (3) the degree of implementation of mangrove conservation practices in the area; (4) the level of participation of the respondents in the mangrove conservation activities; and (5) whether there is significant difference on the following: level of awareness on the importance of mangrove forest; level of awareness on mangrove destruction; degree of implementation of mangrove conservation practices; and level of participation in mangrove conservation activities; and (6) the issues/concerns that need to be addressed for successful mangrove conservation and management.
There were 120 respondents in the study, composed of selected residents near the mangrove areas. There were 20 respondents per study site.
A questionnaire was formulated and distributed to the respondents. The non-experimental research design using descriptive method was used in the study. The sets of questionnaires were supplemented by personal interviews to ensure accurate responses.
Frequency counts, percentages, means, ranks, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Correlation were the statistical tools used in analyzing and interpreting data.
Results of the study showed that (1) majority of the respondents were males, married, aged 45, high school graduate, had been living in their area since birth, and fishermen; (2) the level of awareness on the importance of mangrove forest and the destruction of mangrove forest as perceived by the respondents were rated moderately aware; (3) the degree of implementation of mangrove conservation practices as perceived by the respondents was rated moderately practiced; (4) the level of participation in the mangrove conservation activities as perceived by the respondents was rated moderate; (5) there is no significant difference on the following: level of awareness on the importance of mangrove forest; level of awareness on mangrove destruction; degree of implementation of mangrove conservation practices; and level of participation in mangrove conservation activities; and, (6) the primary issue/concern that needs to be addressed as perceived by the respondents was the lack of community cooperation/participation.
