Abstract
The study has the general objective to determine the drying efficiency of the solar tunnel dryer for chichacorn production at Agricultural Engineering Department, DMMMSU-NLUC, Sapilang, Bacnotan, La Union. Specifically the following were determined: 1.) Quality of the dried corn kernels in terms of color and texture. 2.) Quality of the chichacorn in terms of color, texture and taste. The corn kernels were dried using solar tunnel dryer from December 2014 to February 2015. The samples were dried directly to the sun, by solar tunnel dryer, by solar tunnel dryer with one blower, and by solar tunnel dryer with two blowers. The solar tunnel dryer can dry 3 kilograms (weight of corn kernels after pre drying, before undergoing series of process) of corn kernels using the 36 inches x 33.8 inches stainless tray as container of the corn kernels in drying. Result of drying process based on initial weight (pre drying) to final weight (weight after drying), on T1R3 from its original weight of 3 kgs it turned into 2.16, for T2R3 from 3 kilograms to 2.38, for T3R3 3 kilograms to 2.34 and for T4R3 from 3 to 2.45 kgs. Results showed that there were no significant difference among the four treatments in terms of drying. While T4 is significant to T1 and T2 and comparable to T3 in terms of the color of the dried corn kernels. In terms of texture of the dried corn kernels, T4 is significant to T1 and T3 and comparable to T2.
