Abstract
The study was conducted at barangay Sapilang Bacnotan La Union from October to December 2009. It aimed to assess the feasibility of a village type rainwater harvesting system in terms of technical soundness, environmental dimensions, economic feasibility, social acceptability and political acceptability. Engineering aspect in the construction of the rainwater harvesting system was duly considered. This system serves as an alternative source of water to face the problem on water scarcity.
To find out the feasibility of rainwater from the rainwater harvesting system water samples were gathered from different sources, namely:
Sample 1 - Water from the Pump Well
Sample 2 - Pure Rainwater
Sample 3 - Stored Rain Water from the Tank
Sample 4 - Rain Water from the Pump Well
Result revealed that the water coming from the system was free from Escherichia coli (E. coli) but some bacteria were present in the system. On its economic feasibility, the total cost of construction may be regained after six (6) years and 2 months. The construction and operation of the rainwater harvesting system on its social and political aspects were readily acceptable by the residents of the study area due to water scarcity. Though result of the study showed that the water coming out from the rainwater harvesting system was not safe for drinking, it can be stored and used for domestic consumption.
