Abstract
The study was conducted from December 2005 to February 2006 at the Farm
Shop of the Agricultural Engineering Department, DMMMSU-NLUC, Bacnotan, La Union.Testing was done on the machine’s rate of decomposition and capacity at the Nursery Project, DMMMSU-NLUC, Bacnotan, La Union on Jan. 26-Feb. 14, 2006. The modified composter bin was compared with the designed in terms of decomposition rate and capacity.
The principal parts of the composter bin are the bin or drum, the frame, the drum support, the chain and sprocket and manual drive assembly. The modified parts of the composter bin are the following: the 44t sprocket was change to 48t for the ease of operation, the opener and closer of the bin was made smaller so that it can accommodate greater amount of waste materials, and the bottom was cut in rectangle in order to remove easily the composted wastes after decomposition. The treatments used were the following: T1 (DESIGNED COMPOSTER BIN: 100 kg waste materials w/ 1 kg digester
enzyme) and T2 (MODIFIED COMPOSTER BIN: 45 kg waste materials w/ 1 kg digester enzyme). The cost of the machine was P 4,265.95
The rate of decomposition of the modified Composter Bin – DMMMSU Model
was 0.01 kg/day and its maximum capacity was 45 kg.
The study was laid out in Analysis of Variance (Two Way - ANOVA). Results
showed that the mean temperature between the designed and modified composter Bin was comparable.
