Abstract
Mangroves are integral in the role of sustaining our aquatic resources They are
unique organisms with numerous functions that benefit the entire bioshphere; still and
all, our knowledge does not suffice to prevent the losses mangroves have entailed and are
currently having. This study aimed to identify the biodiversity of mangroves in the
selected areas of The Second District of La Union using natural observation, literature
review and Line Intercept Transect methods. 23 mangrove species were identified during
the course of the study. The Simpson Index of Diversity recorded that barangay Raois,
Sto. Tomas, La Union with the highest value of 0.9406 compared to the other barangays.
Shannon Diversity and Equitability Index show that Pudoc, Bauang had a recorded value
of 2.839 being the highest value in terms of Shannon Diversity Index. Barangay
Narvacan, Sto. Tomas with a value of 0.9870 has the highest value in terms of
Equitability Index.
