Abstract
Jonilyn P. Dispo and Marivic C. Layman did this thesis entitled "Development of
Worksheets in Determinants". Their adviser is Professor Corazon F. Regacho.
They constructed worksheets in determinants to help and guide the students develop
their mathematical skills like analyzing, interpreting and solving exercises and problems in
Linear Algebra under the topic Determinants. It will also serve as an additional reference
material in studying the topic on Determinants in Linear Algebra.
This study aimed to answer the following questions: 1.) How valid are the worksheets
in Determinants? 2.) What is the impact of the development of worksheets in Determinants to
education?
This study used the research and development (R and D) under the descriptive evaluative research design method. A questionnaire was used to evaluate the content validity
of the worksheets.
In the development of the worksheets. the following steps were followed by the
researchers: 1.) Planning and Organizing, which the researchers gathered various reference
materials and relevant facts and information about Determinants and formatting the
worksheets. 2.) Writing the worksheets. which includes editing and evaluating the trial form
of the worksheets.
The content validity of the material was done through the evaluation of five (5)
mathematics teachers in Linear Algebra and College Algebra. Weighted mean was used in
computing the data gathered. Results were tabulated and corrections and suggestions were
considered in writing the final form of the worksheets.
From the computation results. it was found out that the worksheets weighted mean is
4.29 which falls on the bracket 3.60-4.59 in the rating scale, which is ''very adequate". This
means that the content validity of the material has a very high rating. This indicates that each
objective are specific and detailed, clear, and the stated objectives are attainable, to those
Who will take up Linear Algebra on the topic Determinants. It is also useful and appropriated
for college students.
As the result of this study, it is recommended to undergo a try-out to students who
will take up Linear Algebra for the reliability and effectiveness of the material. Also,
continuous revisions for the worksheets for further improvement of the worksheets.
Conclusions
From table 1, we can say that the worksheets are suitable and related to the ability
level of students who will take up Linear Algebra on the topic Determinants. It is also useful
and appropriate to college students.
From table 2, we can conclude that most of the worksheets developed are okay, only
few of the worksheets had corrections.
From the tabulated data on the Validators Evaluation of the Worksheets, we can say
that the worksheets are highly valid as attested by the five competent teachers in Linear
Algebra and College Algebra.
The impact to education on the development of worksheets in Determinants is to have
an improved teacher-student ratio, substantial use of seminars, tutorials, colloquia, consortia,
and an improved method of evaluation, to test not only the student's scholastic achievement
but also his ability to do critical thinking and use of knowledge required. It has been an
accepted aim also to train students to acquire proficiency to discuss and discover as well as to
debate and defend in areas of knowledge that they have acquired.
In short, curricular assessment and redesigning, includes use of suitable textbooks and
other instructional materials, improved and tested teaching methods and adequate evaluation
techniques.
