Abstract
One's image of mathematics defines how an individual perceive mathematics as a topic, as well as how they feel and think about studying it. Students' perception on mathematics and how they learn it are closely related. This study explored BS Mathematics students' image of mathematics, as expressed through doodling. Qualitative methods were employed in categorizing the objects, expression, attitudes and thoughts conveyed in the students' doodles, which was validated using their respective essays. As a result, three key themes emerged: "Mathematics is Numbers and Figures," "Mathematics is Challenging," and "Mathematics is a Pathway to Success." From the key themes observed, students perceive mathematics as a blend of numbers and figures which underscores consistent associations with calculations and problem-solving. As a subject, students find mathematics as challenging consisting lots of equations and hard to understand topics. The notion of mathematics as a pathway to success gains significance over academic years, aligning with practical applications in daily life, which also surfaced from students' image of mathematics.
