Publication Exploring health and health issues from the lens of "Mangangalakal" (waste pickers)(Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State Univeristy - South La Union Campus, 2024-03) Sedan, Jane Andrei R.; Abdullah, Raihannah M.; Basa, Kristine N.; Caloma, Edmarie V.; Kour, Priya; Marquez, Renee Faye C.; Pispis, Trisha Mae P.Scavenging is the unregulated removal of valuable materials, where Waste pickers or 'Mangangalakals' makes their living from waste sites. This study aimed to explore the meaning of health and health issues experienced by mangangalakal. The researchers conducted a photovoice approach that incorporates orientation, photograph generation, in-depth interviews, focused-group discussions, and presentation of findings. After obtaining ethical clearance from DMMMSU-REC, a purposive recruitment was done. A total of 14 participants who were: (1) ages 18-59 (2) local residents (3) waste picker for over 4 years (4) dependent on scavenging and (5) owns mobile phones, agreed to participate in this study. Three themes represent health and health issues experienced by the participants: (1) Waste Pickers' Willingness for Enhancing Health; (2) Improper Behavior Towards Waste Pickers' Health; and (3) Hazardous Towards the Health yet Essential to Vitality.
