| dc.description.abstract | Networking is a systems approach to management while research and development is considered the key to economic performance and social well-being of the rural population. In the Northern Philippines, Yam (Dioscorea alata L.) is a high value root crop known for its medicinal value and rich in calcium and phosphorous content. To develop yam as a sustainable commercial crop, it requires a networking system along research and development program, organizational, output and outcome linkages. It highlights the importance of multi-disciplinary knowledge flows and entrepreneurial relationships among and between industry, academic, government and non-government institutions and people's participation. As a developmental study, the networking intervention and strategies utilized are on research an development that supplied appropriate technologies and in a multi-disciplinary approach employed a variety of extension delivery systems provided fund support then the science and technology enterprise assistance mechanism. Municipal Science and technology Advisory program (DOST-MSTAP) developed entrepreneurs, involved stakeholders and determined its radiation effect. Results revealed that 15 research and development conducted from 2001 - 2004 studies lead to the standardization of yam flow technology that are processed into food products like cake, tart, jam, yema, candy bar, maja, pastilles, brownies, pie and ice cream. All the products are subjected to quality formulation and testing. A total of 17 trainings with 706 clienteles were trained in the whole gamut of the social and production technologies of yam. For its technology dissemination, joining exhibits, released one video program aired over national television program and press releases in national publications. Distributed 1,544 techno guides and pamphlets on yam production which was likewise supported by 92 farm demonstration. Nine government non-government organizations are included in the networking activity to provide financial and institutional support. Right now, some 450 farmers are involved in the enterprise and produced 67,900 ube setts, generating 50-60% return on investment and made a significant radiation effect. Entrepreneurship development requires an institutional networking system. That impact of the long term program. | |
