Abstract
This study is focused on the self-concept and career choice of the Junior High School students in order to come up with a Proposed Career Guidance Program which is designed to help foster a positive self-concept and career literacy among the students. The study used a descriptive research design and convenient sampling. The research instruments utilized are the Piers Harris Children Self-Concept 2" Edition (PHCSC-2) and Occupational Aptitude Survey and Interest Schedule Third Edition (OASIS-3). There is a total of 286 participants from two identified private schools in the City of San Fernando, La Union. The data gathered were entered in the SPSS to compute the mean T-scores for each of the self-concept domain scales and mean Stanine scores of each of the career scales. Moreover, there were three statistical tools that were used for the correlations of the variables which are the Point Biserial Correlation(r pb), Eta Correlation(η) and Pearson Product Moment Correlation (r), all of which were analyzed at the alpha(α) level 0.05.
The results revealed that the general self-concept of the students is low and the most preferred career choice are Artistic, Scientific and Humanitarian scales for the total group, Humanitarian scale for the male group, and Mechanical for the female group, while the least interesting career choice for all the three norm groups is the Physical Performing scale. With respect to the correlational analysis among three major variables of this study, the results have shown a significant relationship on particular variables, however, the strength of relationship is weak.
