Abstract
One of the teachers’ concern is to discover effective strategies in developing students 'vocabulary skills for these skills are impetus to their academic success. Thus, this study aimed to determine the effectiveness of different vocabulary teaching strategies—synonyms and antonyms, word association, dictionary, context clues and graphic morphemic analysis—to Grade 7 students of Wenceslao National High School. It used the one group experimental, descriptive survey, and qualitative research designs. The instruments employed were pretest-posttest for determining students’ performance, survey questionnaire and teacher’s journal for learner’s attitude. The tests’ mean scores were calculated for descriptive statistics and were compared using t-test. Respondents’ attitudes were determined through average weighted mean. The study revealed that the respondents’ performance level in learning vocabulary through the five strategies had improved; that is, from frustration level to instructional level. Findings also show that these five strategies show a very good promise in their use in teaching vocabulary to the learners. Likewise, the students manifested a favorable attitude towards developing their vocabulary skills through these strategies.
