Abstract
Mother Tongue Based-Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) refers to education that starts with the first language and transitions to additional languages. It was first implemented in the country during SY 2012-2013.
This research assessed the implementation of MIB-MLE in the Division of La Union. It specifically assessed the level of implementation, the degree of seriousness of the problems encountered, and the difference in the assessment as perceived by the central and non-central school teachers in the division. Descriptive method of research was utilized, and a researcher-made questionnaire was used as the primary tool in the data gathering. Moreover, observation on the teaching of Mother Tongue (as a subject area and as a medium of instruction) and interview were conducted. The extracts were used to cross-validate and provide vignettes on the interpretations made.
Results revealed that the MTB-MLE in the Division of La union is highly implemented. However, moderately serious problems still exist in the implementation. In addition, there is no significant difference in the assessment of the central and noncentral schools. Moreover, there is a significant difference in the assessment of the two groups of respondents.
