Abstract
Genotoxicity and teratogenicity of the water and sediments of Aringay and Bauang Rivers in La Union were tested using Allium cepa (onion) assay and Danio rerio zebrafish) assay. Four stations were selected for each river where water and sediment samples were collected in May and November 2015. Furthermore, the physico-chemical characteristics of the water and sediments were also described. Heavy metal analysis of the sediments showed that arsenic, copper and lead exceeded DENR standard. Results revealed that water and sediment samples obtained from the various stations in Aringay and Bauang Rivers in La Union demonstrated root growth inhibition, reduction in mitotic index and occurrence of chromosomal aberrations in Allium cepa. Likewise, for the Danio rerio, low percent survival, delayed and abnormal hatching rate, decrease in the number of melanocytes, stunted body length and various developmental abnormalities such as yolk sac edema, curved body and curved tail were also observed indicating possible genotoxicity and teratogenicity of the two rivers.
