Abstract
This study determined the effectiveness of classroom voting in teaching Discrete Mathematical Structures (ICT 106) on the performance of the 2nd Year Bachelor of Science in Information and Communications Technology (BSICT) students of Pangasinan State University San Carlos City Campus, 2" Semester SY 2011-2012. Specifically, it determined the profile of the respondents as to Final Grade in Math 101 and Stat 102, and attitudes toward Mathematics; mathematics performance of the students in their pretest and posttest; difference in the pretest and posttest scores; difference on their posttest scores; difference in the mean gain scores of the two groups; and relationships between the profile of the students and their mathematics performance. The study employed the pretest-posttest control-experimental group design. The experimental group was subjected to classroom voting while the control group used the conventional method. Respondents were matched as to their grades in Math 101, Stat 102 and attitudes toward Mathematics. Questionnaires on attitude towards mathematics and on the selected topics in ICT 106 were used to gather data. The statistical tools used were frequency counts, percentages, and weighted means. The t-test and the Pearson r were employed to test the null hypotheses. Findings showed that majority of the respondents performed poor to fair in Math 101 and satisfactory to very satisfactory in Stat 102. Majority of them had favorable attitude towards Mathematics. In the pretest, both groups have more or less the same performance. After the study, their performance was high especially the experimental group. The experimental group exposed to Classroom Voting performed significantly higher in ICT 106 than the control group. The computed r showed that respondents’ final grade in Math 101 and Stat 102 was significantly related to their performance in posttest but their attitude towards mathematics posted no significant relationship with their performance in posttest.
