dc.description.abstractThe study determined the effect of different mulching materials on the performance of different varieties of cucumbers (Cucumis sativus L.). The study was laid-out following the Split – Plot Design with three blocks. The treatments used were: Main plot (Cucumber Varieties), such as V1-Ambassador F1, V2-White Hera and V3- Poinsett 76; Subplot (Mulching Materials), such as T0- Control, T1- Rice Straw, T2- Rice Hull and T3- Plastic Mulch. The study found no significant results obtained on the days to emergence, number of marketable fruits and non-marketable fruits per plot, weight of marketable and nonmarketable fruits, gross income yield/Ha, yield per plot and survival percentage. However, number of days to flowering was significantly influenced by cucumber varieties, White Hera exhibited earlier flowering compared to other mentioned varieties showing a high level of significance among them, while Poinsett 76 had the longest time to produce flowers. The number of days to fruiting, influenced by mulching materials, the Ambassador F1 and White Hera were comparable, but they significantly differed from Poinsett 76 and they yielded highly significant results. Regarding the shoot length, influenced by mulching materials, rice hull resulted the highest root length, while plants treated with control (no mulch) exhibited the lowest, the effect of mulching materials on shoot length was notably significant. On the correlation analysis between temperature and mulching materials, rice hull showed a strong positive correlation coefficient with humidity and highly significant result. Those results underscore the importance of selecting appropriate mulching materials for optimizing the performance of cucumber varieties in agroforestry systems, such as those planted between calamansi trees.
