Abstract
Code-switching is a way of switching from one language to another. This qualitative study aimed to explore the phenomenon of code-switching among third-year Bachelor of Arts in English Language (BAEL) students. Six participants were selected using purposive sampling, and semi-structured interviews were conducted.
Thematic analysis was used to interpret the data, resulting in the identification of themes related to the purpose, benefits, and strategies of code-switching. The themes included the desire to fit in and be heard, the maintenance of effective communication and lexical reserves, and the use of tone change, word generation, word meaning negotiation, and memes as code-switching strategies.
The researchers recommend the encouragement of code-switching during class discussions to enhance expression and understanding, the use of first language alongside English, and the exploration of code-switching among different groups using diverse research methods. Overall, code-switching serves as a beneficial tool for self-expression, effective communication, and sense belongness.
