Design, fabrication, and performance evaluation of Bean sheller
Abstract
The study was conducted to design, fabricate and evaluate the performance of the bean sheller specifically for mung bean, string bean, and pigeon pea. The machine’s performance was evaluated with the following: shelling efficiency, shelling recovery, and, shelling capacity. Different shelling drum speed was used to evaluate the performance of the machine. The speeds were 350 revolutions per minute, 450 revolutions per minute, and 550 revolutions per minute. Results revealed significant differences in terms of shelling efficiency, shelling capacity, and shelling recovery. The gathered data showed that the highest shelling efficiency of the machine are 97.97, 95.5, and 97.82 percent for mung bean, string bean, and pigeon pea, respectively. The machine shelling recovery is of 96.69, 93, and 96.32 percent for mung bean, string bean, and pigeon pea, respectively. The most preferred shelling capacities are 63.39 kg/hr for mung bean, 72.92 kg/hr for string bean, and 75.1 kg/hr for pigeon pea. The production cost of the machine is ₱43, 260.00. Based on the assumption used, it could be recovered in 300 productive days for mung bean, 173 productive days for string bean, and 158 productive days for pigeon pea with a break-even point of ₱11,699.86 kg/year for mung bean, ₱8,439.26 kg/year for string bean, and ₱8,043.66 kg/year for pigeon pea.
