Oregano (Origanum vulgare Linn.) is a wonderful perennial culinary as well as medicinal plant, which is recognized as one of the "functional foods" for its nutritional, anti-oxidant and disease- preventing properties. Oregano contains many health benefiting essential oils such as carvacrol, thymol, limonene, pinene, ocimene, and caryophyllene. This study was conducted to determine the effect of the oregano extract (3, 6, and 9 ml/li of water) on the performance of broilers, and to determine the appropriate level of oregano extract that give the highest possible return. This was conducted from February 4, 2011 to February 24, 2011 at the Poultry Project of Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University, North La Union Campus, Sapilang, Bacnotan, La Union. Based on the results of the study, the final weight, gain in weight, feed consumption, feed conversion ratio, and profit above feed, medicine and stock costs of birds given with medicated water using oregano extract from 3 to 9 ml/li of water were comparable with the birds given medicated water using vetracin. Hence, oregano extract can be used as substitute for commercial antibiotic (vetracin).
