The study was conducted to determine the status of the slash and burn farming in the upland communities of Santol, La Union. It specifically aimed to determine the a) profile of the respondents; b) level of awareness of the respondents on the effects of slash and burn farming; c) perceived reasons of practicing slash and burn farming; and d) degree of seriousness of the impacts of slash and burn practices as perceived by the respondents. The study made use of a descriptive design to obtain information from the respondents of the upland communities. The selection of respondents was done through purposive sampling. There were forty (40) respondents selected in every barangay. Personal interviews with the aid of prepared questionnaires and observations were engaged to gather data. Frequency counts, percentage, means, and analysis of variance were used in the analysis of data. Results of the study showed that farmers who are practicing slash and burn farming were seasoned farmers with limited areas to be farmed and with meager income. Farmers are moderately aware of the different impacts of slash and burn farming. They agreed with the different reasons of practicing slash and burn farming. Impacts of slash and burn were perceived to be moderately serious. An environmental management plan was proposed to address the perceived impacts of slash and burn farming.
