Gout has become a common disease at present. Despite the many commercially available drugs, most of these cause side -effects. Hence, in search for potential antihyperuricemic agent, this study has been conducted. Potassium oxonate was introduced to male albino mice to produce a hyperuricemic model. Different treatments were administered to the hyperuricemic mice namely distilled water, allopurinol and different concentrations of Euphorbia hirta leaf extract to assess their antihyperuricemic activity in terms of % inhibition. The phytochemicals detected in E. hirta leaves were flavonoids which may be responsible in inhibiting the enzyme xanthine oxidase. There were also saponins, phenolics, carbohydrates, reducing sugars and proteins present. The findings showed that 7.5, 15, 30 mg E. hirta/Stl g bw of mouse significantly affected the SUA levels of the mice. In addition, the plant extract acts in dose-dependent manner suggesting that E. hirta leaf extract can be a good candidate agent against hyperuricemia.
