Abstract
This research aimed to assess the water, sanitation and hygiene of the public elementary schools in the Municipality of San Juan, La Union. Specifically, this study aimed to determine the a) profile of the schools b) the extent of adoption of water, sanitation and hygiene practices, c) the degree of seriousness of the problems met by the schools in terms of water, sanitation and hygiene, and d) the level of satisfaction of pupils on the use of available water, sanitation and hygiene facilities.
Total enumeration of the elementary schools with one administrator and 18 pupil respondents were selected. The study was conducted through personal interview with the helped of questionnaires and personal observations.
Elementary schools in San Juan were still not fully equipped with water, sanitation and hygiene facilities considering the population of pupils, however, the initiatives and resourcefulness of the teachers enable them to cope. The elementary schools are very highly adopting good water, sanitation and hygiene practices. The
problems on water are perceived to be slightly serious while problems on sanitation and hygiene are perceived to be not serious. Pupils are very much satisfied with the use of the available facilities for water, sanitation and hygiene.
