Abstract
Due to increasing cost of medicine, researches had been focused on the possible
substitutes for water supplement for broilers which are locally produced and relatively cheaper such as oregano and lemon grass extract. The study was conducted to determine the performance of broilers using oregano and lemon grass extract in the drinking water from January 4, 2015 to February 7, 2015 at Barangay Casiaman, Bacnotan, La Union. A total of 60 day-old-broiler chicks were randomly distributed into 4 treatments, following the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) in three blocks.
The result of the study showed that the performance of birds supplemented with
20 ml of oregano extract per liter of water, 10 ml oregano + 10 ml lemon grass extract and 20 ml lemon grass extract per liter of water were comparable to those birds given with commercial antibiotics in terms of final weight, feed consumption, profit above feed, medicine and stock cost, however significant differences were noted in gain in weight, feed conversion ratio and feed cost per kilogram weight gain.
