dc.description.abstractThe study aimed to design, construct and evaluate a foot-powered compost sieving machine. The fabrication was done at Poblacion, San Gabriel, La Union. It was constructed from December 2014 to February 2015, and the testing was done on February 3, 2015 at DMMMSU Pig Extension and Research Farm (DPERF), Baroro, Bacnotan, La Union. The machine has the following main parts: a) hopper, b) screen assembly, c) power transmission assembly d) frame assembly and e) discharge chute. The Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Complete Randomized Design was used to analyze the data, and the Duncan Multiple Range Test was used to evaluate significant difference among the treatments. Compost with moisture content of 33 % was used as a testing material. Three treatments with three trials each at 5 kg were used to evaluate the machine. Sieving speed, sieving time, and weight of the sieved output were gathered to determine the sieving capacity and sieving efficiency of the machine. Results revealed that there is highly significant difference among the treatments in terms of sieving capacity and there is no significant difference among the treatments in terms of sieving efficiency. Results revealed that the machine has capacity of 469.55 kg/hr and sieving efficiencies of 99.77 % and 98.27 % for 1.18 mm and 4 mm, respectively. The machine has an overall dimension of 1,524 mm long, 1,220 mm high and 610 mm wide. The machine entailed a cost of Php 8,633.00 and had a recovery period of approximately 5 years and 8 months of operation to recover investment cost.
