Abstract
This study was carried out to modify the IRRI type manually operated rice seeder and to test the performance in terms of seeding capacity, and seeding efficiency. The modification, construction & test performance of the machine were undertaken at Barangay Sucoc – Sur Luna, La Union from November 8, 2004 to February 16, 2005.
The modifications of the existing IRRI manually operated rice seeder were as follows: The drum serving as container to temporarily store the seeds to be planted was changed into hopper type to allow the seeds to slide down to the metering rollers/device. A furrow opener & furrow closer were added to the machine to enable the machine to varying seeding conditions. Ball bearing was used to connect the shaft to reduce friction thus lessening the pull force of the operator. A Single wheeled seeder was converted to double wheeled seeder to prevent bogging in soft puddled soil.
The manually operated rice seeder was designed to drop 2-3 seeds per hill with a specific distance of 10 cm. per hill and 20 cm. between urrow and a depth of 1-2 cm, and having simultaneous occurrences furrow opening, dropping of seeds & furrow closing.
The manually operated rice seeder can be operated by just one person. It has a mean seeding capacity of 0.16 ha/ hr and 0.252 ha / hr and mean seeding efficiencies of 49.75 % and 57.36 % in dry seeding and wet seeding conditions, respectively.
The total cost of the machine was 2079.99 pesos.
