Abstract
This study was conducted to assess the carbon stock of National Greening Program (NGP) site in Puguil, Santol, La Union. NGP aims to reforest the estimated 7.1 million hectares of denuded and degraded forestlands within the Philippines. The study used oneway analysis of variance (ANOVA). Soil sampling was conducted on the three sites to evaluate soil characteristics. Each site had three 20x20 meter plots, covering 5% of the total area. Sample collection was distributed across each study site by plotting three sampling points with a 1x1 meter quadrat within the 20x20 meter plot. A routine Soil Test was conducted to measure the amount of Soil pH, P, N, K, Ca, Mg, and Na. Rambutan dominated the NGP and had the highest exchangeable bases, EC, and total nitrogen. The Secondary forest (SF) has the highest pH and was dominated by Mahogany and Arosep. Moreover, grassland has the highest phosphorus and is dominated by Tiger grass and Cogon. SF accumulated a higher AGB (304.91 Mg/ha) followed by the NGP (123.93 Mg/ha). In litter biomass, SF has the highest, followed by NGP and grassland, with 1.52 Mg/ha, 1.23 Mg/ha, and 0.21 Mg/ha, respectively. SF (46.88 Mg/ha) has higher aboveground carbon stock than NGP (25.56 Mg/ha). However, NGP accumulated the highest soil carbon stock, followed by grassland and SF with 68.04 Mg/ha, 67.20 Mg/ha, and 66.49 Mg/ha, respectively. In litter carbon stock, SF has the highest value with 25.23 Mg/ha, followed by the NGP (21.44 Mg/ha) and grassland (3.62 Mg/ha).
