Abstract
This study was conducted to (1) establish relevant information as to the personal and business profiles, (2) analyze the profitability of ube processing, (3) determine marketing strategy of the processors, (4) and determine the problems encountered by of the processors. A descriptive research design was employed and a questionnaire supplemented by actual interview of the respondents was used to gather necessary data. The data were drawn from five ube processors who were recipients of the DOST-STEAM-MSTAP Program of DMMMSU. The recipients were from Bacnotan, Balaoan and Rosario, La Union. Results on the personal profile indicated that the ube processors were in their mid 40s, mostly married, females, belonged to varied religious sectors and with three children. Less than half of them (40%) attained college level and a few (20%) were college graduates, college with masteral units (20%), and elementary graduates (20%). As to their business profile, the average year in processing was 6.1, 60% use an area of three square meters to process ube. The least number of equipment utilized was five, and the most was 21 pieces. The lowest cost of production was P381.25 and the highest was P39,680.00. Majority (80%) made halaya and all of the respondents hired additional labor for P150.00/day. The return on investment (ROI) ranged from 4.17% to 25.97%. The payback period ranged from 0.083 year to 10.54 years and the break even point ranged from 384 pieces to 1,021.12 pieces of ube products. Contact buyers dominated the market outlets. Ube products were marketed using the cash basis of payment (80%) and are transported using the tricycle. Lack of buyers was rated “very serious”, low price was rated “moderately serious”, lack of capital and storage facilities was rated “serious” problems.
