Abstract
This study was conducted to identify the different external and gastrointestinal parasites affecting pigeons in La Union and determine their prevalence rate. Eight (8) municipalities in La Union were randomly selected as sampling sites. Fifteen (15) pigeons per municipality with a total of 120 pigeons were used. Ectoparasites were identified based on their morphological characteristics. The modified Stoll’s method with necropsy procedure was used in identifying gastrointestinal parasites. Results disclosed that the external parasites affecting pigeons in La Union were Menopon gallinae, Columbicola columbae, Menacanthus stramineus, Goniocotes gallinae, Dermanyssus gallinae, Megninia columbae, and Pseudolynchia canariensis. Majority of the pigeons in La Union were affected with external parasites with 86.67% prevalence rate. The gastrointestinal parasites affecting pigeons in La Union were Ascaridia columbae and Raillietina species. Most of the pigeons in La Union were affected with gastrointestinal parasites with 64.17% prevalence rate.
