Abstract
This study examines the Life after the Flames: Stories of Fire Victims from a City Public Market in Northern Philippines, focusing on the challenges they faced, the recovery strategies they employed, and the intervention programs they received. The research captures the personal narratives of fire-affected vendors and explores the broader social and economic impact on the community using qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews and participant observation. The findings reveal that victims primarily struggled with financial hardship, loss of livelihood, and emotional trauma following the fire. Many individuals adopted adaptive strategies to recover, such as resilience and adaptability, collaborative help, finding relief and guidance through family and friends, relying on informal networks for financial and emotional support, and gradually rebuilding their businesses through personal savings or small loans. The study also examines the role of government and non-governmental organizations in providing postdisaster support. While intervention programs such as financial aid, food assistance, and community-based support were deemed helpful, several challenges, including insufficient assistance from the government, were identified. The research underscores the importance of strengthening community resilience and enhancing recovery programs to mitigate the long-term impacts of future disasters. This study contributes to a better understanding of the human side of disaster recovery and emphasizes the need for inclusive, sustainable recovery mechanisms to support marginalized communities in times ofcrisis.
