Abstract
This study was conducted at Luneta, Loacan, Itogon Benguet from January to February 2012, to assess the awareness of the community dwellers to the impact of the Luneta Small Scale Mining Association, which is one among many Small Scale Mining Projects (SSMPs) in the municipality of Itogon. This study was undertaken to determine the adaptation strategies that were employed at the SSMP in Sitio Luneta, Loacan, Itogon, Benguet.
Descriptive research design was used in the study. The study made used of constructed questionnaire, substantiated by personal interviews to gather information from the respondents. Percentage, Frequency counts, weighted means and t-test analysis were the tools used in the analysis of data.
Based on the result of the study, more than half (59.43%) of the respondents were male. Most (70.46%) of them are married, (21%) 35 years old, high school graduates and were miners.
The level of awareness of the respondents on the socio economic impact of the SSMP in Sitio Luneta registered a grand mean of 4.06 with a descriptive equivalent of aware.
The level of awareness of the respondents on the health impact of the SSMP in Sitio Luneta registered a grand mean of 3.55 with a descriptive equivalent of aware.
The level of awareness of the respondents on the environmental impact of the SSMP in Sitio Luneta registered a grand mean of 3.51 with a descriptive equivalent of aware.
The level of adoption of the respondents to the adaptation strategies being employed was rated as “often adopted” with a grand mean of 3.89.
The t-test revealed the following: there was no significant difference on the level of awareness between Upper and Lower Luneta to the socio economic impact of the SSMP operation; there was a significant difference on the level of awareness of the respondents on the health impact of the SSMP operation; there was a significant difference on the awareness of the respondents on the environmental impact of the SSMP operation; and there is no significant difference on the extent of adoption of the respondents to the adaptation strategies employed for the SSMP operation.
