Abstract
The study aimed to determine the effect of different pollen supplement in royal jelly production. There were 12 colonies used in the study which was laid out using the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four (4) treatments replicated three (3) times. Three kinds of pollen supplement from the three different legumes crops seeds
(soy bean, mungbean, pigeon pea) was prepared and fed into the study colonies. The data was analyzed using the Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) for the comparison of treatments. The experiment was conducted at the Apiary site of National ResearchTraining and Development Institute from November 29, 2015- February 11, 2016
A significant difference was revealed on the rate of egg laying pattern of bees. It was observed that pigeon pea is less preferred by the honey bees compared to the other treatments. However, results were insignificant as to the consumption of bees, length of time, and number of food frames, graft acceptance and the width of royal jelly produce
per cell. Thus royal jelly production during the months of April to May as pollen supplement royal jelly could be sustained with or without pollen supplementation. The researcher recommends the use of these locally available legumes seeds, (soy bean, mungbean and pigeon pea) as pollen supplement during the time that natural pollen is un
available.
