This study was conducted specifically to determine the: (1) profile of the respondents and the fishery industry; (2) industry practices and problems along production, marketing, human resources, finance, and support services; (3) strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the fishery industry; and (4) recommend a development plan for the fishery industry in the municipality of Bacnotan, La Union. The data were gathered through personal interview with the aid of a questionnaire from one hundred twenty (120) registered fishermen drawn from the seven (7) barangays of Bacnotan, La Union. The data were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), the Chi-Square test, frequency counts, percentage, range, mean, and ranks. Findings revealed that the majority (83%) of the respondents were male and had an average age of 51 to 60 years old. Fishermen identify high capital requirements, high input costs, lack of transportation, lack of equipment for fishing, low buyer-set prices, and losses due to natural calamities as major issues. In marketing, the setting of prices by the market was identified as a problem. There was no transportation available from storage to market, and family members had poor orientation to fishing due to lack of human resources. Limited capital is one of the financial issues faced by fishermen. In support and services, lack of financial support and technical support from LGU were identified as problems. The relationship between mode of payment and sex, fish recordkeeping and sex, as well as practice in recordkeeping and educational attainment, have significant relationships. | |
