Urban green spaces play a crucial role in carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience. However, there is limited research on the capacity of public parks in Ilocos Sur to serve as effective carbon sinks, particularly in relation to their vegetation cover, species composition, and structural characteristics. This study aimed to quantify the aboveground biomass and carbon stock of trees and palms in the 14 public parks across the second district of Ilocos Sur. It further investigated the relationships between carbon stock, park area, species richness, vegetation cover, and species count to provide insights into sustainable park management. Allometric equations were applied to estimate biomass and carbon storage while correlation analysis was used to determine correlation among variables. The total biomass of the study area was approximately 208.87 tons per hectare, with an average carbon stock of 27.09 tons per hectare, and a maximum vegetation cover of 81%, reflecting the combined biomass of trees and palms present in the public green spaces.Findings indicate that carbon stock is more strongly linked to tree size (DBH) than species richness. Parks with larger trees had higher biomass even with fewer species, whereas parks with a greater number of smaller trees stored less carbon. These insights emphasized the need for conserving and planting high-carbon-sequestering tree species to enhance public park’s ecological functions. The study provides valuable guidance for urban planners and policymakers in sustainable park management and climate adaptation strategies.
