Abstract
This study aimed to determine the factors influencing food
preference of the elementary pupils of DMMMSU-ELS,SY 2003 -
2004
Specially, it sought to answer the following questions:
1. What are the factors influencing food preference of the
elementary pupils of DMMMSU- ELS as to:
a. media
b. social factor
c. socio- economic status
2. What is the extent or degree of factors influencing food
preference of the elementary pupils?
3. What are the food preferences of the respondents as to:
a. snack
-junk food
-nutritious foods
b. lunch
- junk foods
-nutritious foods
4. What is the extent or degree of the food preference of the
respondents as to:
a. snack
-junk foods
- nutritious foods
b. lunch
- junk foods
- nutritious foods
5. Is there a significant relationship between the factors
influencing food preference and the food preference of the
elementary pupils of DMMMSU -ELS?
The descriptive method of research was used and a
questionnaire-checklist and guided interview was the main
instrument in gathering the needed data.
The researcher made use of the Microsoft software program on
correlation, specifically the Pearson r Product Moment Correlation to
determine the relationship of factors influencing food preference and
the food preference of the respondents. The computed value was
compared to the critical value, which is equal to .14509 at alpha .05
(2 tailed)
The frequency count, percentage distribution, and weighted
average mean were used in analyzing the data gathered and to
identify the significant relationship between the factors influencing
food preference and the food preference of the respondents.
The focus of the study was the elementary pupils of the Don
Mariano Marcos Memorial State University Elementary Laboratory
School at Agoo,La Union of School Year 2003 - 2004. There are 183
total populations from grade I to grade VI, which served as the
sample population of the study.
Findings:
In the light of the data gathered and analyzed, this study came
out with the following findings:
The extent of the factors influencing food preference of the
respondents through the use of media and social factor, affected the
respondents in their choice of food choice.
Junk food and nutritious food are sometimes preferred by the
respondents as their snacks and lunch in school.
Media is significantly related to the food preference of pupils.
