Abstract
This study focused on the assessment of the respondents on
the extent of sustainability of the preliminary survey in the
accreditation of the BS Psychology Program.
The material used in this study was the questionnaire checklist. The instrument was used to determine the extent of sustainability of the preliminary survey in the accreditation of the BS Psychology Program of the College of Sciences. The researchers adopted the questionnaire and it was revised to suit the purpose of the study.
The research design in this study was the descriptive survey
method. The purpose in the use of the descriptive survey method laid
on the fact that the main intention of the researchers was to
determine the extent of sustainability of Preliminary Survey of the BS
Psychology Program of the College of Sciences.
The study was conducted in DMMMSU-SLUC, College of
Sciences. Administrators, faculty, students, and parents of the
College of Sciences particularly in the BS Psychology Department for
the school year 2003- 2004 comprised the population.
The researchers made use of the total enumeration for the
administrators and faculty respondents. For students (2nd - 4th year
BS Psychology)and parent respondents, the researchers made use of
simple random sampling. To determine the exact sample of the study
with regard to student and parent respondents, the researchers used
the Sloven formula Ferguson (1981). The study had a total of 108
respondents. Of this number, 65 were students, 30 were parents, 11
were faculty, and 2 were administrators of the BS Psychology
Department of the College of Sciences.
The following statistical tools were used: frequency count to
determine the response of the respondents on the extent of
sustainability of the preliminary survey in the accreditation as
perceived by the respondents; weighted mean and average weighted
mean, Statistical Packages of Social Sciences (SPSS) program and
Analysis of Variance (ANOVA)through the Micro stat Program was
used to determine the differences between the respondents
perception on the extent of sustainability of the preliminary survey in
the accreditation of the BS Psychology program of the College of
Sciences.
Findings of the research revealed that:
1. Areas 2- (Faculty, 3- Curriculum and Instruction, 8-
Physical plant and Facilities and 10- Administration) was
perceived by faculty respondents to have been sustained to
a "very great extent".
2. All areas (1-10) of accreditation were rated by the parent
respondents to have been sustained to a "great extent".
3. The administrator respondents perceivedto have sustained
to a "moderate extent" the areas 3- (Curriculum and
Instruction) and 5- (Research and Extension). The
administrators perceived have sustained to a "great
extent" the other 8 areas.
4. The student respondents viewed that the program has
sustained to a "moderate extent" and rated areas 3-
(Curriculum and Instruction) and 6- (Extension and
Community Involvement).Ali, other areas were rated by
same respondents as having sustained to "great extent".
5. In Area 1- (Mission,goals and objectives),students, parents
and faculty respondents rated items and broadcast media
and e- novelty items "moderate" in their extent of
sustainability. Administrator respondents rated the same
items to a "least extent". On the other hand administrator
respondents rated item 3 of Area 1 to a "very great extent"
while item 5 was given also a rating a "very great extent"
by the faculty respondents. All other items were rated by the
sets of respondents to a "great extent".
6. In Area 2- (Faculty), items i.e. (rank and tenure) l.f
(recruitment and selection) were rated "moderate extent"
by student and parent respondents while administrators
rated said items to a "very great extent". In general, this
area received higher ratings over the other areas.
7. In Area 3- (Curriculum and Instruction), Administrator
respondents gavethe lowest ratings on the items, compared
with the ratings given by student, parent and faculty
respondents which are "great extent".
8. In Area 4- Students, all items had average mean equivalent
to a "great extent". However, the administrator respondents
rated items 1 (updates alumni directory for follow up and
placement purposes) and 5 (awards the students of a
student center to accommodate officers for student
organizations)to a "moderate extent".
9. In Area 5- (Research), administrator and student
respondents gave the lowest rating on the different items
compared with the faculty and parent respondents. The
items 2.c, 3.a and 4.b were given a rating of "least extent"
by the administrator respondents while l.a and l.b were
rated "very great extent" by same respondents.
10. In Area 6-(Extension and Community Involvement),item 1
(designates full time extension awards) was rated "least
extent" by faculty respondents. Items 2 and 3 were rated
by student, parent and faculty respondents as a
"moderate extent".
11. In Area 7- (Library),items 1.a was rated to a "moderate
extent" by student, faculty and administrator respondents;
items 1.b was rated to a "moderate extent" by student,
parent and faculty respondents; while 4 and 5 rated "least
extent" by administrator and "moderate extent" by
faculty respondents.
12. In Area 8- (Physical Plant and Facilities), the items were
rated to a "great extent" by student and parent
respondents and "very great extent" by faculty and
administrator respondents. However,item no.4 (provision
for drinking water and facilities areas) rated "least
extent" by the administrator and item no. 1 (provision for
male and female quarters) was rated "moderate extent"
by student and parent respondents.
13. In Area 9- (Laboratory), items 3a.S (sanitary facilities) was
rated by the student, faculty and administrator
respondents as "least extent" by the respondents, items
b.2 (suitably surfaced graded and drained) and b.4
(adequately maintained) was rated "great extent" by
parent, faculty and administrator respondents and
"moderate extent" by student respondents. While item
b.3 (appropriately out for a variety of activities) was rated
"moderate extent" by the student and parent
respondents, on the other hand the faculty respondents'
rated "very great extent" and "least extent" by
administrator respondents.
14. In Area 10- (Administration), item l.a (faculty manual) was
rated "moderate extent" by student and parent
respondents, "very great extent" by faculty respondents,
and b by administrators; item l.b was rated "moderate
extent" by students and parent respondents, "great
extent" by faculty and "least extent" by administrators.
15. The responses between and among the four group of
respondents (students, administration, faculty, and
parents) did not differ in the first nine areas of
accreditation. Responses differed significantly on the last
area (Administration).
As a result of the findings, the following conclusions were formulated:
1. Almost all areas of accreditation were rated by the
respondents to have sustained to a great extent.
2. Area 3- (Curriculum and Instruction) was rated by both
administration respondents and student respondents as
moderate in its extent of sustainability: Area 6 - (Extension
and Community Involvement) was gained a moderate rating
by the student respondents while area 5 - Research was
given by the administrators a rating of moderate.
3. The faculty respondents rated Areas 2 - (Faculty), 3 _
(Curriculum and Instruction), 8 - (Physical Plant and
Facilities) and 10 - (Administration) to have a very a great
extent in terms of sustainability.
Based from the findings and conclusions the following
recommendations are given:
1. More activities in the dissemination of the MGO's should be
done specially in the used of broadcast media and printing
of MOO in different novelty items.
2. Students and parents should also be informed of policies
pertaining to faculty recruitment and selection in their rank
and tenure.
3. Administrators should involve faculty and students in
curriculum review sand planning.
4. Alumni directory should be updated for placement and
follow-up purposes. Other recognized organizations should
be given a place in the student center.
5. Administrators should assign or designate qualified
manpower to the research units and teachers assigned to
do research activities should be reloaded with teaching
assignments. Research findings should also be
disseminated and published on time.
6. Full-time extension workers should be designated by the
administrators. Teachers assigned to do extension activities
should be reloaded from teaching assignments.
7. The library should be equipped with more facilities like
audio-visual equipment and carrels. Administrators should
provide for staff development to the librarians. Resource
center should also be made available.
8. There should be provisions for living quarters for students.
Drinking facilities should also be provided
9. There should be adequate measures in the laboratory room
for the safety of the students and teachers. Drinking
facilities should also be provided in the laboratory room.
10. There should be an additional manual for non-teaching
personnel.
11. The administration and all those involved In the
accreditation of the BS Psychology should exert effort to
meet all recommendations given by the accreditations;
12. More efforts be exerted to improve the areas which were
rated moderate in the extent of sustainability like Curriculum and Instruction, Extension and Community Involvement and Research;
13. Another study will be conducted to include more
respondents particularly that of administrators, alumni
and community folks especially after the conduct of the
formal visit of the AACUP;
14. Results of the study are for future accreditation activities.
